ULTIMATELY, HIS RELATIONSHIP with Captain Ringewald had come to this: Favors became demands. Gifts turned into bribes. Handshakes disappeared, and threats took their place. Sheriff Barnes was no longer the intimidator. He was the intimidated. He had looked away while his friends were badly treated: their barns burned, farms and businesses stolen, and lives threatened.

Looking townspeople in the face had become all but impossible. Same with looking at himself in the mirror.

The news that Greenleaf had just brought to him was the final straw. Some men, he said, would soon be coming to town to “take care of Lewis Taylor.” The captain, he said, suggested that it might be a good time for Barnes to pay an overdue visit to his sister in Fort Worth.

He pulled a handful of gold coins from his pocket and placed them on the desk. “Enjoy your vacation,” he said as he headed for the door.

Sheriff Barnes sat silently at his desk long after Greenleaf was gone. He knew the quiet in Gila Bend was about to end. So was his relationship with Archer Ringewald.
